Sevilla have booked their place in next season’s Champions League after drawing 1-1 at Atletico Madrid on Sunday evening.
All that was left to play for at the top of La Liga going into matchday 37 revolved around the fourth and final Champions League place.
Sevilla only needed a point to clinch qualification at Real Betis’ expense, and they earned an excellent 1-1 draw at Atletico.
Jose Gimenez gave Atletico the lead but Youssef En-Nesyri equalised five minutes from time.
This meant that Real Betis’ 2-0 win over Granada proved irrelevant. Juanmi hit a double for the home team.
Champions Real Madrid played a shadow team at Cadiz and could only draw 1-1. Mariano Diaz scored Madrid’s goal, with Ruben Soriano replying and Alvaro Negredo missing a penalty.
Second-placed Barcelona also drew, 0-0 at Getafe, but that was enough to secure them as runners-up due to third-placed Atletico’s draw.
Real Sociedad have locked in the UEFA Europa Conference League position by finishing sixth after winning 2-1 at seventh-placed Villarreal. Alexander Isak and Martin Zubimendi scored the goals.
Down the bottom, Levante beat Alaves 3-1 but both have been officially relegated.
The third and final relegation spot will be decided on the last day, with Mallorca, Cadiz and Granada all at risk.
