Arsenal are set to miss out on the Champions League next season after suffering a 2-0 loss at Newcastle that leaves them fifth in the Premier League table.
The Gunners went to St James’ Park knowing that a victory would carry them back above Tottenham in the standings but instead followed up their loss last week to Spurs with a comprehensive defeat in which they showed very little quality.
The upshot is that they are sitting on 66 points for the season, two behind Spurs. With a massively inferior goal difference, they will have to beat Everton on Sunday and hope their London rivals are beaten. Antonio Conte’s side, though, play a Norwich side that is already relegated.
Elsewhere, there was positive news for Chelsea, whose Champions League place next season has been assured courtesy of Arsenal’s second defeat on the spin.
At the top of the table, Manchester City required a fantastic second-half comeback to keep the title race in their own hands as they drew 2-2 at West Ham.
The Hammers raced into a two-goal lead at half-time thanks to a double from Jarrod Bowen.
But City produced a brilliant comeback after half-time to earn a point. Jack Grealish’s deflected shot got them back in the game before Vladimir Coufal’s own goal equalled matters.
Riyad Mahrez missed a penalty four minutes from time, meaning City had to settle for a draw.
They are four points ahead of Liverpool at the top of the table, although the Reds have a game in hand.
This means that City know that if they win their last game of the season at home to Aston Villa they will be champions.
Burnley are in the relegation zone – though they have a game in hand – after Leeds got a late equaliser against Brighton.
Pascal Struijk scored deep into injury-time to earn a 1-1 draw after Danny Welbeck’s opener.
Everton are still not safe after their thriller against Brentford.
Elsewhere, already relegated Watford were thrashed 5-1 at home to Leicester and Norwich drew 1-1 at Wolves.
Aston Villa and Crystal Palace drew 1-1.
